The Opener

One of my favorite things about live music is learning about new artist by showing up early for the opener. It’s usually a smaller, more intimate crowd, and I love the aosphere, and the music!  This painting is of a solo artist who goes by Broken Anchor, that I saw open for Scars on 45 at my favorite small local venue.

Veteran’s Day

Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day, a day that holds a great deal of personal significance for me and my family. My father is a Vietnam Veteran, one grandfather was a Korean Veteran and my other a WW2 and Korean Vet. In addition my Uncle, Brother-in-Law and several friends have all served. Below are two paintings that I created to represent the idea of a veteran. Any profit from the sale of Art Prints (originals are not for sale) of these two paintings will go to the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars to help support our Veteran’s.

“Boots”
boots

My Grandfather Bachman was a proud Veteran of the Korean War and commander of the local Korean War Veterans Association that was responsible for the creation of a Memorial in my home town. I gave him a watercolor of soldier’s boots, an important part of the memorial,  for Christmas last year. He served his country as a Veteran and a Firefighter, and truly displayed selflessness that hope to honor with this artwork.

“The Veteran”

This painting is from a photo I took at a Fourth of July Celebration near my hometown. The man pictured, a family friend, was a World War 2 veteran. He was patriotically dressed and had paused for a moment of reflection during the festivities.

Musical Inspiration

image

The three things inspire the most are travel, antiques and live music. I have never been able to create music (just ask my middle school band director) but I have always loved it. Being part of the crowd, listening, watching and feeling the music is one of my favorite things.

Two weekends ago I got to see my favorite current musician, punk -folk artist Frank Turner. I came back feeling so inspired by the experience, that I began looking through old concert photos. This painting is from a Wombats show at the Legendary 9:30 club. I think there will be more concert paintings in the future.

Beverley Street Studio School Juried Show

I was honored to have been selected to be a part of the most recent Juried Show, Interiors and Still Lives,  at the Beverley Street Studio School Gallery in Staunton, Virginia.  I was not familiar with the school before, but I am very excited to take some classes there and get more involved in what looks like an excellent community of Artists.

July 2015

I have managed to finish two pieces during the month of July, and do a ton of sketching for others. Its amazing how much time I have over summer break!

puertorico
“Señora Puerto Rico”
Inspired by all the varied natural beauty different parts of Puerto Rico we visited, and the vibrant cultural heritage of the blended Taino, African and European/American people that shape it.

“Cadaques”

Inspired by the Fishing Village, turned idyllic Mediterranean Holiday, Cadaques, Spain.
The old town’s buildings are all stuccoed or painted a crisp white, as they have for centuries, with the only color coming from occasional cornflower blue shutters, and seasonal blooms of vibrant plants like the one above.

Cameras Cameras Cameras

If you know me personally,  you know I love my vintage camera collection. I don’t use many of my cameras (many are no longer functional, use glass plates or hard to fild films) I love and collect  them because of their unique styles. To me, they are like small mechanical sculptures. I recently created some detailed, hand drawn, pen and ink Drawings of some of my favorites.

Words, Maps and Tiny Watercolors

I have recently been inspired by my 1962 atlas, and my increasing wanderlust symptoms, to create a series of small watercolor quote illustrations. I photographed them on my atlas, so I could use its beautiful vintage charm without damaging it in the process.

International Women’s day

Women’s suffrage movement of the early 20th century, women’s liberation and equality protests in the 1960s, and women’s choice and anti violence advocating today. Here in the US and around the world. The fight for women’s rights is not new, and it’s not over.
Happy International Women’s Day!
